Toi Tangata Hui-ā-Tau 2020 - Napier

An annual hui which helps provide focus and traction for the workforce on the positive kai, wai and kori tinana outcomes for our communities. The conference has become the preeminent hui in Māori nutrition and physical activity and is launching into its fourteenth year.

The theme of the Toi Tangata Hui ā Tau 2020 is Pātaka Oranga. The concept of Pātaka Oranga, ‘storehouse for wellbeing,’ acts as a symbol of our physical and cultural wellbeing, embracing all the tools we have at our disposal to reach our full potential, including kai, wai, korikori tinana and many more.

Pātaka has many literal and metaphorical associations in te ao Māori. It refers, literally, to the elevated platform for the storage of food or taonga and becomes a strong symbol of our knowledge and of all things we characterise as our wealth, embedding the values, traditions, social and spiritual wellbeing of te ao Māori. Ultimately, it is a symbol of safe keeping.

In this respect, the concept of Pātaka Oranga reflects our commitment to help tangata achieve their full potential with the mātauranga we gather and share.

Participants of the Toi Tangata Hui ā Tau 2020 can be seen as guardians of the pātaka, with a role in replenishing and sustaining the wellbeing of whānau and all communities within Aotearoa.
