National Oral Health Day

The NZDA-led, sixth National Oral Health Day was celebrated on Friday 8 November 2019. New Zealanders were challenged to choose water over sugary drinks for the entire month of November as part of this campaign.

New Zealand pole vault athlete and Olympian Eliza McCartney was the face of this campaign for another year. Apart from featuring in our campaign poster, Eliza also promoted the Switch to Water challenge on the MediaWorks AM Show, in an online video and across many social media outlets. Overall, about 12,000 kiwis took the Switch to Water challenge in November.

“I know that it’s all about one step at a time, so opting for water over sugary drinks is the perfect first step, towards a healthier you.

Not only is this great for dental health, but this means fewer unneeded ‘empty’ calories, and there’s the acidity in sugary drinks which erodes tooth enamel,” - Eliza McCartney

Apart from schools, there was also great support from NZDA dentists up and down the country, and various health groups and DHBs also backed the challenge.
